1. What is endometrial ablation? Back to Top
Endometrial ablation is an effective alternative to hysterectomy for patients suffering from heavy or prolonged bleeding during their period. It is often chosen when other medical treatments have failed or are considered undesirable. This procedure involves the removal of the lining of the uterus, which is the source of the bleeding. It is an outpatient surgical procedure, which means that the patient enters the hospital, has surgery, and generally goes home on the same day.

A narrow viewing tube is inserted through the vagina and the cervix into the uterus. A tiny camera attached to the viewing tube (hysteroscope) allows the uterine cavity to be shown on a TV monitor during surgery. The uterus is filled with a harmless liquid to make the procedure easier. Then the lining of the uterus is removed or vaporized, using a heat generating tool which is inserted through the viewing tube.
3. What is the recovery time for the procedure? Back to Top
Your doctor may advise you to refrain from strenuous physical activity for 24 hours, and refrain from sexual activity for up to two weeks after the procedure. A follow up exam is also scheduled about one week after surgery.
4. Are there any side effects associated with the procedure? Back to Top
Some patients experience one or more of the following after the procedure: excessive urination, cramping, or bloody discharge.
5. Who is a good candidate for the procedure? Back to Top
Any patient who no longer wishes to have children and is seeking either an alternative to a hysterectomy or would like to reduce their heavy menstrual flow would be a candidate for this procedure. Because there is still a slight possibility of pregnancy, however, you should continue to use contraception until you have entered menopause.
